Clapper Rail Juvenile
We saw this young bird very close at hand at Bolsa Chica, a compact reserve on Route 1 in Huntington Beach in Orange County. We spent the day in the area, also at Newport Back Bay and the San Joachin Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine. It was a marvelous day; we actually saw two rails at Bolsa Chica--it's rare enough just to see one.
Next day edit: We have realized that this California subspecies of the clapper rail has recently been upgraded to a full species, called Ridgeway's Rail (Rallus obsoletus). I'll not change the title of the blip, to reduce potential confusion.
