Where did the family money go?

I did some work this morning, then this afternoon I went out with my grandparents. We were on an ancestor trail, as I recently discovered that many of my ancestors lived near where I ended up settling. Evidently, there was money in the family at one point. The blip is Bents House, where my great great great great great grandparents lived. The gardener let us in the garden to look at the house and told us it is on the market. It's offers in the region of 895,000!!!! Where did the money go?! I grew up in a housing association flat for goodness sake!! I sadly wont be buying, but do I look like I could afford to?! I'm considering booking a viewing, but not sure if it's plausible!
