The Old Post Office, Tintagel
Oh my ... rain, rain, rain today!
We left the wonderfully cozy Lugger Hotel in Portloe, Cornwall this morning. When we checked out, we were given a little carrier bag with bottles of water and handfuls of sweeties. How thoughtful!
We navigated our way through swaths of rain to Tintagel, storied home of King Arthur and Merlin. The place was heaving with doughty souls, wrapped up well in waterproofs and wellies, ready to do battle with the weather. We visited the Old Post Office in the town -- a 14th Century yeoman farmer's house with the most fantastically charming wiggly slate roof! The building gets its name from the Victorian era when, according to the National Trust, "it briefly held a licence to be the letter receiving station for the district."
From there, we trudged into the wind and rain down a steep path to Tintagel Castle -- a very atmospheric ruin on a wet and blustery cliff. As I wasn't really wearing the appropriate footwear to tackle the slippery slopes, we gazed at it from afar, took a couple of rain-spattered photographs, and then turned tail and headed back to the car park before hypothermia set in!
We are now ensconced at the very lovely Mount Hotel in Somerset, and we're looking forward to our second blipmeet of the trip tomorrow with TBay!
