Lead, with the atomic number of 82 is one of the main elements in the carbon group.

It is also one of the heaviest metals around, which for me is a good thing. Lead shot is most commonly used in shooting which can be a bit of a surprise when tucking into your nicely cooked pigeon breast. However we normally used it as ballast when diving. To overcome the buoyancy of our kit lead weights are used to enable us to sink. Although the old style lead weights might look cool in a Bond film the dig into your hips too much. Lead shot is used by filling a weight belt this then allows the shot to mould around waist.

In addition lead has also been used to help lower the melting point of glass and also to enhance its decorative properties.
