18 rue Moselmann, Carentan

A house with a varied history.

Built in 1897 as part of the Lepelletier butter factory complex; the business was sold in 1923 to the American Milk Products Corporation, later changing its name to Carnation and then to Gloria.  The house was home to the company directors.

In 1940 the top two floors were requisitioned as accommodation for the German army of occupation.  On 12th June 1944, after the success of the D-Day landings, it became the HQ of the 101st US Airborne Division under General Maxwell Taylor.   In the basement captured German soldiers ran a canteen catering for other German prisoners as well as the allied forces.

To the left is a glimpse of Carentan's port.
