Le Mont Aiguille

Today's the day ............................ to climb

This huge pinnacle of limestone is aptly named Le Mont Aiguille  and is one of the mountains in the Vercors Plateau near Grenoble in southern France.

At 2,085m or 6,841ft it is one of the Seven Wonders of Dauphine.  It looks (to me at any rate) as if it would be impossible to climb - but apparently it is very popular with the locals who nip up there on a Sunday on a regular basis.  It was first climbed in 1492 and was said to mark the birth of mountaineering in this part of France.

It was one of the many incredible peaks that we passed it on our way to a wonderful garden high up near the village of Mens.  It was another place full of butterflies like the one below ............................
