St. Saviour's and the Marsh

Like a lot of Irish towns, Arklow has several places of worship. There are the Baptists, the Independent Evangelicals, Methodists, Presbyterians, Roman Catholics and the Church of Ireland (Episcopalian in the USA). A hundred years ago there was some architectural competition between the RC's and the Cof I. When the Roman Catholics built their new church they made sure that the spire was taller than the "Protestants" one. The other side then promptly built a new church of their own, St.Saviours, which had a taller spire again. At this point the referee must have blown full time because the match was over and things settled down with this, St.Saviour's Cof I having the tallest spire to this day.
In front of the church here you will see the dreaded Arklow Marsh, a large area of great interest to lovers of bird and insect life but very prone to extensive flooding. Draining it is off the menu due to the damage it might cause to flora and fauna alike. So we are stuck with it, floods and all.
