Parallel roads

The heather sides of Glen Roy and Glen Gloy show a number of horizontal lines that follow the height contours. These are the famous 'parallel roads'. Their geological explanation is that they were left behind as scars of ancient lake shorelines when the Great Glen was filled with a huge valley glacier at the end of the last ice age 12000 years ago. Glacial advance forced tongues of ice up these side valleys and dammed up the waters to form lakes, some of which were released in giant floods as the ice subsequently retreated.

Our greedy friend was back to greet us on our return (see extra).
