OK - what is it?

Luce was barking wildly at this fellow which was on the ground behind some wire. I have little no real knowledge of small creatures (unless they have four legs, fur and bark!). This is about 4" long and about ½" in diameter - she was quite concerned that it might break out and attack her I think!
I am sure that there is someone who will be able to tell me.
