Diary of an Edinburgher

Bye Bye Leo :-(

My last day with Leo, as I've got the day off next week, anticipating lots of last minute emergencies. I think he knew, as he wanted my company ALL day. He didn't sleep AT ALL. Thank you, Leo, I am even more p**ped than normal!

He was asleep when I arrived, unusually, having been up at 5am. It was nice to sit and have a coffee and a chat to his mum for a change. But he was up by 8am and raring to go. He's at such a talkative and giggly and easily amused stage, but requires entertainment.

As he was awake, I bundled him in the buggy, intending to have a scone and flat white before the library sing-song at the excellent cafe I discovered last week.

Good idea. Except that the cafe was not yet open when I arrived at 9.55. No lights. How could they be making the fresh scone for me by 10.05? I worried. They should be in there making them now. I hope they're not like other establishments who just leave their muffins and croissants in the window, covered in cling film, ready and 'fresh' for the next day! I hung around a bit more. Then read a small notice in the window to say that they were closed for a few days. If they knew how disappointed I was, they would have rushed in for half an hour!

At the sing-song I had an easy time - no lifting him high during songs this week. No, he sat himself right down the front and watched the lady doing it and occasionally got up and gave a rattle to (or more likely took a rattle from) another child. He laughed and clapped and generally had a good time. I laughed and clapped and stifled great yawns, an occasional one slipping out noisily.

Having missed out on my calorie intake, after the library I set off for another cafe I knew that was not too far. It's an outdoor clothing shop, but tucked in the back is a cafe with high chairs, and a toy area for kids.

There were two aisles with a row of tables and chairs down the middle. There were three people obviously having a business meeting. But instead of turning right and parking by the nearest table, I set off up the left hand aisle, with the aim of going right round the top and back down, facing the buggy ready to leave. But on the way I misjudged the width of the buggy wheels and crashed into every chair leg on the way up, had a noisy complicated manoeuvre round the top corner and then crashed into every chair leg on the way down the other side.

I couldn't look, but I think the folk having their business meeting all stopped to observe this sight. Once settled (to everyone's relief) I had a passable flat white and the densest edible material known to man - a chocolate brownie of such a size that I could not finish it. This is a first! I wrapped it up and took it home for later. It was truly delicious.

My blip today is of Leo and the cat. Leo's mission is to touch the cat. The cat skeddadles out the cat flap every time he comes near. Leo stood and tapped the window, pleadingly, for ages. The cat ignored him.

He's got a cheeky wee grin in this one. I'll miss wee Leo. He'll be a big grown up boy by the time I see him again in August.

Will he have forgotten me? :-(
