Christchurch Priory museum.

This week's memory jogger for me is a detail from an 1832 tithing map of Christchurch.  The numbers link to the Tithe Schedule and show landowners, occupiers, size of plot, rent charge, who the money goes to.
As early as 855 AD churches were given the right to a proportion of the yearly profit from local farming.  The money supported the parish church and clergy.  After the Dissolution of the Monasteries most tithing money/goods went to local landowners and the Crown.  The practice fell into disuse after  the Tithe Commutation Act of 1836.
