Remembering Srebrenica

This is Nura Begovic  , one of the Mothers of Srebrenica who have been the driving force behind remembrance  of the genocide which took place here in NE Bosnia in July 1995.

She told us her story late this afternoon sitting in the warm sun at the Sebrenica / Potocari Memorial & Cemetery surrounded by the 6377 graves already filled.

The total of those slaughtered over four days by Serbian forces was around 8300 so work continues to find and identify the remaining 2000.

After Nura genocide survivor Nedžad Avdić told his remarkable story of survival which brought to a tearful culmination a day in which the small Scottish delegation remembering Srebrenica had visited the ICMP Mortuary in Tusla  , learned a lot about matching of DNA data at the other ICMP facility in the town and then had undertaken a harrowing visit to the Potocari camp where a Dutch  UN Force failed to protect the thousands of men, women and children who believed what they had been promised, a story told once again from personal experience by Hasan Hasanovic.

We must never forget no matter how painful it is to remember.  The mothers demand that of us.

For if it can happen here it can happen anywhere .
