Minarets
The sun was still shining in Sarajevo this morning - in fact it was hotter than ever.
Before we were allowed to have a couple of hours down time to wander the city prior to our departure Resad , the in-country Bosnia representative of Srebrenica UK took us to a lovely outdoor cafe over looking this very beautiful city.
We sat and had traditional Bosnian coffee , sucking it from sugar lumps , and marvelled at the view which includes a staggering number of minarets just a few of which are in the picture.
Resad told us that in the past those who wished to pay for the erection of a mosque found a site by waiting for the call to prayer at an established mosque and then walking away until they could no longer hear the sound. That was a spot where a new mosque was obviously needed .
On Tuesday when having lunch in the garden of the British Residence the call came and it echoed from minaret to minaret around the city, the hills acting like a natural amphitheater . It was spell binding.
This has been a fascinating , moving and thought provoking trip with the best of company. I am lucky to have had the opportunity to take part and I very much want to go back to Bosnia, as I think all of the delegation now do.
I have posted more images of the visit to Bosnia Herzegovina with "Remembering Srebrinca" on my Flickr pages.
