Two chimney's Farewell Kiss
They came in their thousands frae all roond aboot
Those words were sung on the occasion of the opening of The Forth Railway Bridge in 1890. They applied equally to the thousands who flocked to the shores of the Firth of Forth to see the demolition of these two 149 metre high chimneys at Cockenzie, today.
On the stroke of midday the charges were fired and the two chimneys leaned towards each other - kissed - and then collapsed in a silent pile of dust.
At a stroke the landscape was changed for ever.
There are some who are pleased to see the chimneys go - with pulses of blots on landscape punctuating social media ahead of today's execution. But the majority present today seemed to be sad to see them go.
In the moment of demolition there was a sense of sadness, and surprising silence at the speed with which the chimneys were pulverised.
Some commented on how this event reminded them of the footage shown as the twin towers in New York came down on 9/11.
My extra photo tries to give some sense of the crowds who came down to Portobelllo Promenade.
