Collapse of 'Coal King'
From vantage points on land and from a flotilla of boats at sea, it seemed that half of the local population watched the demolition of the Cockenzie chimneys today. The two 149m high chimneys have dominated the skyline of the Forth estuary for the last 50 years but the coal fired power station was regarded as being too polluting and uneconomical so was decommissioned in 2013. Then with a couple of loud bangs which sent the birds flying from their perches and to the sound of cheers, the chimneys were brought down within seconds and as they fell it seemed that the spectre of Coal King who had dominated the area over the last two hundred years or so, had finally collapsed.
The extras show the chimneys before and after.
