The Last Salute
Although I have been to Great Lakes National Cemetery many times, I have never been to a service. Doug's family (see Thursday's blip) invited me to take a few pictures.
I tried to remain in the background as far as the family was concerned, but I did concentrate on the volunteers who take part in the final service.
In my visits in the past, two things always get to me. The 21 gun salute, and the playing of Taps by the bugler. The guns scare me (even when I'm expecting them), and the song brings sadness. The final parting words, the final goodbye, the final salute.
Day is done,
gone the sun.
From the hills,
from the lake,
from the skies.
All is well,
safely rest.
God is nigh.
Like I said on Thursday...a good man.
