Days Deprived of Buffalo Sightings
And then...

This afternoon we’re bumping down a dusty dirt road in Custer State Park.
Pausing periodically to scope the area with binoculars.
Searching for those elusive buffalo.

What’s this?
Long prairie grass beaten down on either side of us.
Dry stalks slopped across the road.

Our gaze travels to the top of the ridge.
Wowee.
An endless line of female Buffs,
Traveling single file.
Towards us.

Just before crossing the road,
Cow and calf stop at the top of a short downhill stretch.
Then, they run down and across in front of us.

We stopped counting at 300.
I mean who’s lucky enough to see this.

A never-to-forget experience.

Extra photo shows part of the line on the ridge.
