Eye of the Wind.
Five days ago, I blipped a Brig sailing past our beach in the Bristol Channel. A few days later, I went to Cardiff Bay Barrage in search of a blip, and guess what was in the harbour? The very same boat and its name is now "Eye of the Wind". It is 104 years old and built at the Luhring shipyard at Brake in Germany and was originally named "Friedrich". In May 1924, she was sold to a Swedish owner who named her "Sam". Two years later she was sold to a Swedish shipping line who fitted her with engines and renamed her "Merry", and she spent the next 30 years crossing the Baltic and North Seas as a cargo ship . In the autumn of 1955 she ran aground on the Swedish coast and was wrecked. She was salvaged and repaired and became a fishing vessel. She is now owned by an English man who had her completely stripped and re fitted to a very high standard. She has sailed round the world including the infamous Cape Horn and has been used in many major Hollywood films too. Quite an interesting history! I have just realised, after publishing this blip, that there is a chap climbing on the rigging of the forward mast!
