The Old Pilotage Offices in Mermaid Quay, Cardiff.
This fine old grade II listed building was built around 1880 by Lord Bute to house the large work horses used to pull barges up and down the Glamorganshire Canal. Around 1890, the building was ccupied by River Pilots who had to guide ships into the harbour after entering the treacherous waters of the Bristol Channel. For me, the most distinctive thing about this building is the wonderful weathervane of a ship made from copper and steel( see my additional photograph). The weathervane is a comparatively recent addition, being fitted in 1970. The building has for some years now been used as a restaurant.
