Sick, lame and lazy

This is the gate to the homestead - paddock one surrounds the property and is home to the sick, lame and lazy heard, plus the two zebra's who have adopted this gang of reprobates.  Today they spent a whole lot of time hanging out by the gate, maybe keeping the twins company as they have free range of the garden - otherwise known as the calf nursery.  Their mother is generally hovering somewhere close just outside the gate waiting to get let in for their feeding time - not due to an amazing motherly instinct to feed her calves, nope, she gets extra feed when she comes in which is far more appealing.

The herd is made up of a right bunch, there's blind cow, who I have a soft spot for, very pretty and very heavily pregnant at the moment, she doesn't tend to stray very far for obvious reasons. Then there are those who have been wounded in some form, including cut shirt - so named as a farm hand used a shirt to try and bandage the bad hyena wound (it didn't work, but he's recovering, slowly).  There's hop a long, who broke it's hind leg somehow and now has a horrible limp, plus a whole lot of others who have ailments and wounds of some sort.  It's hard not to have an affection for this lot, especially as we see them all the time.

It's been thundering most of the day with a little bit of rain.  We finally got power back this morning after no power from yesterday afternoon.  It made for a rather atmospheric evening when the generator was switched off and we were using candle light, especially with the rain hammering down outside.

As for the boy, well, we're almost mobile - or we are if you count rolling over and over to get where you want to go and kind of swivelling around then pushing you head along the ground.  We're at the stage where you can guarantee he won't be where you left him, so life it about to get interesting.
