Surrey Wood Fair
If you've never been to a Wood Fair, find one and go. It's not all about lumberjacks, although the demonstrations are very interesting and such fun for the children to have a go at tree climbing with all the ropes attached. The countryside crafters we all there and you could also have a go at weaving a basket, whittling wood, chair making and leather punching, amongst a great deal more.
The mist was heavy when we arrived, making me wish I had a jacket, but the sun did come out in strength to bring out the crowds in the later morning. The stalls were jam packed with interesting things to browse and the children ran around with huge grins on their faces, and a lot of paint.
People still come up with ingenious ideas within the craft world.
No, I didn't buy these, For once I thought of my on going battle to minimise the junk I accumulate. The seller is a woods craftsman and turner who makes furniture and adornments out of anything that comes from a tree except the sap. He may even make Birch Sap Wine for all I know.
Having taken old wine bottles to a glass working friend they came up with this idea to use up both the bottles and all the old offcuts of wood from various projects. I'm sure their whim must have come from something stronger than alcohol.
This image is part of a huge tree root that drips with glass jars, each one moulded perfectly onto the wood it sits on. There were many single jars moulded to a branch or a small root and they were selling like hotcakes. Dali comes to life in these surreal structures. What to do with them once they're home? One woman was going to keep a goldfish in hers!
