The "Long John" Lighthouse
Today our old friend Kjell, who moved to this area many years ago, took us to the southern tip of the island of Öland. There we found this lighthouse which naturally we had to go up, and a nature reserve with lots of birds and seals. Jan blipped from the top of the lighthouse so I went for this view instead. I thought the sky behind the lighthouse added to the drama.
Migrating birds basically follow the coast southward and many stop for a while on this very flat area with lots of shallow water and lagoons. When we were there there were large numbers of geese, a few swans, many smaller birds and a large flock of cormorants, as well as about 20 seals basking on rocks next to the shore. The seals can be seen on the extra photo.
It was really hard to choose a single photo and a few more images can be found on my flickr.
