Everyday I Write The Book

It's not funny

Comedy was everywhere today.

Drove up to see Aged P who wasn't too bad today. We went to Sevenoaks, where they had just started a two week summer festival. They had choirs and stalls and jugglers who told jokes whilst they juggled. They were't very good at getting laughs or keeping their balls in the air, unfortunately. Aged P. kept getting me mixed up with my late stepfather which usually doesn't bother me but today for some reason wasn't very funny either.

One of the alleyways in Sevenoaks had a band - classic rock. People thought it was funny and were smiling as they warmed up because they were about 12 to 15 years old.  But then they started and  people stopped smiling, because they were really, really hot. Excellent musicians and everyone got into it, even the Aged P was nodding her head.

Driving home I saw the most surreal thing. A broken down car full of theatrical props and standing on the hard shoulder looking comically miserable was a fully dressed up clown. I almost laughed out loud but thought he might be on his way to a gig and stood to lose money and reputation. So from his perspective maybe it wasn't funny.

Tonight we went to the Canal Cafe Theatre in Little Venice and celebrated a birthday with a friend in the pub before going upstairs for an hour of very funny and well conducted satire a la mock the week. Particularly good running gag about the relationship between David Cameron and Nick Clegg.  But thinking about it on the way home, particularly the jokes about Greece and austerity, I realised it had done what good comedy does: made me laugh and made me think about things that really aren't funny.

Here's something else to amuse. You get given a medication that, when you read the leaflet, says that one of its side effects is to cause the very problem that you are taking it to stop.

Its been a funny old day ...
