Backblip 5th October: Loch Morlich
The surprise "on-site" night in Glenmore Forest at Loch Morlich was a good move. The site is huge but has a rustic feel and the pitches nestle into the woods very comfortably. It's well-kept but lacks that white-washed, manicured militaristic feeling. We declared it to be the next best thing to wild camping.
There is direct access to the forest and a short path leads to the loch-side beach. Way-marked routes run straight out from the loch. Some pitches have a mountain view, but not the one that we picked.
We had arrived in time to do the short trail before dusk fell, though we did delight in a few early bats as we walked home.
The morning dawned with a certain lack of promise, however. We took the risk, moved Bruni to the car park next to the camp site, donned waterproofs and set off on the round-the-loch trail for a brisk 4 mile stroll, congratulating ourselves on having made the correct decision to visit the Mountain Railway yesterday - the tops were heavily shrouded in cloud today.
I left the Canon behind due to the chance of rain but some of the views made me wish that I had not done so.
After lunch we set a course for Grantown-on-Spey, stopping at Nethy Bridge for a walk along the Speyside Way.
The site that we had booked at Grantown was very much not "us" and not in the least like Glenmore (where we shall stay again) - the only thing that it had going for it was the 15 minute walk down the road to the Indian Restaurant - where we had a rather good meal. Probably the best restaurant curry we have enjoyed since leaving Yorkshire.
