New Old Fort Bent
This morning we visited the reconstructed Fort Bent on the Santa Fe trail. The original was built in1833 and burnt down in 1849. By then the fur trade was in decline. The new fort has been built on the original site. The adobe rooms were much cooler than the surrounding area and it didn't take much imagination to see how wonderful it would have been to stay here while conducting business. A little bit of civilization on the trail. When I stood on the upper level it was a bit like the cowboy movies but the attendant said the fort was never attacked. The National Parks Service charged $3 per person. Amazing.
