Which Way?

Went for a ride in the countryside,
when a decision I had to make.
Should I go left, or should I go right?
Which lane should I take?

I was out in search of sand-hill cranes,
tried to find the crane mother lode.
But, here I sat...right in this spot...
I was at a fork in the road.

What kind of shape was the road in? It had really started to erode.
Was this shot in my town? No, it was another zip code.
Bumpity bump...what was that? (Went over the tracks of the railroad.)
Had a piece of pie on my way home. You guessed it...a la mode.
Why did I have to hurry home after the pie? Had to hit the commode.
