On Edge
A couple of seconds before I pressed the shutter for this image, Ms. Red Squirrel was checking out the stairs that lead down from our deck (see extra). I “caught” her here just before she launched herself toward the other side of the deck railing, scrabbled up the side of house, jumped across to a large leafy shrub, threw herself onto the wooden arbor, clambered down to the fence railing, and made her way back to the big Douglas fir that’s home to several squirrels.
I guess Ms. Red Squirrel thought it was too much trouble to take the deck stairs down to the back yard.
A few minutes prior to all this activity, Ms. RS and a second squirrel had been investigating the suet feeder for birds that hangs on one corner of the deck, perhaps taking a break from searching for and storing more appropriate squirrel food for winter. It's a busy time of year for them!
Even though several varieties of squirrels are common here, I always enjoy watching their acrobatic feats, which make quite a contrast to yesterday’s contemplative rabbit.
