Degi

Second day on the Tana ferry, walking down the road to the harbour as the sun comes up and sailing away from Kunzula at half past six.

By midday we were at Degi, where the captain said we had an hour for lunch. Actually the pier is so long that it takes twenty minutes to walk into town, and perhaps you can tell from the photo just how hot and bright it was. We walked along a dusty road littered with animal bones, and got caught up in a funeral procession along the way. We met a birdwatching guide called Andyreyanou and went with him for a coffee in a cafe where there were more flies at the table than people. This soon changed, however, as the local children turned up.

Back to the boat and onwards through the afternoon to Gorgora. We were actually sad to leave the ferry, as a real community spirit had developed by Day Two, with people sharing food and an invitation to sit in the captain's cabin.
All good things come to an end, though, and who knows? We may come back a third time...I do like a good cruise!
