Lefkara

We are staying just outside Larnaka, Cyprus. It was a perfect day for wandering around taking photographs: not too may people about, temperature about 25C. So much so that I was torn as to which to select.  The one I have chosen is a detail of a shutter on a small cottage in Lefkara, in the mountains above Larnaka.

I could have chosen a shot of Pyla,  just a few kilometres from our hotel. This is the only village in the Republic of Cyprus where Greek and Turkish Cypriots live together, in harmony because of a very strong community spirit. It is right on the border between North and South Cyprus. A United Nations Police Station stands in the middle of the village, where no photography is allowed. A pity because two UN soldiers were today playing hide and seek with a young local child.  I could have tried a sneaky picture but would probably have been shot or at least arrested.

Pyla is also home to the University of Central Lancashire's Cyprus Campus, a little bit of Preston in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Earlier in the day we had a long walk around Larnaka, with just a small amount of paddling and watched some local dancers.
