The Church at Almancil on the Algarve
This 18th Century Church is often described as
a gem of the Algarve. So it was. It was
commissioned by local inhabitants by way
of thanks to St Laurence for answering their
prayers to bring rain after a prolonged drought.
Some years later he was put to death for
refusing to offer the treasures of the Church
to the King. When they were demanded of him
he refused bringing forward only the people
saying these were the treasures of the Church.
He was martyred by roasting to death on a gridiron.
