Porth Amlwch

It was a rest day for us today on our walking holiday on the Anglesey Coastal Path, and we took the opportunity to visit the industrial heritage site of Porth Amlwch.

It is such a quiet spot now that it is hard to imagine that throughout the 19th century it was a bustling scene of heavy and highly toxic industry. The discovery of rich copper reserves at what became the world's biggest open cast mine at the nearby Parys Mountain led to the development of Amlwch as an industrial port.

This harbour was once surrounded by copper smelting furnaces, lime kilns and shipbuilding activity.
