Faesten Dic

I have orienteered in Joydons Wood many times but today was the first time I noticed a ditch that winds for nearly 2km through the woods with very steep walls,  guarded at one place by two wooden soldiers.  The explanatory plaque reads that Feasten Dic ( Strong Ditch) was built between the 5th & 6th C when there was a lot of tribal warfare in the Bexley area between the Roman Londoners and the Saxons in Kent. The picture shows the Roman soldier facing his Saxon counterpart shown in the extra and who seems to have lost his legs .
