After a guided trek through the dense forests in the Vallee de Ferney nature reserve we walked back though this clearing to watch a couple of Mauritius Kestrels. In1974 there were only 4 birds left and it was feared to become extinct like the Dodo, but  through a careful breeding programe by 2014 this had increased to 400. We were also shown a Bois Clou (nail tree) of which there are only 4 known to exist in the world and unfortunately this tree was damaged and so would produce no seeds. To us it didn't look very impressive (see extra)  Apparently Mauritius is the third  most vulnerable island in the world for the destruction of the native species so attempts are being made to eradicate invasive species and protect the endemic flora and fauna. We were asked to identify by smell, of various other trees, like cinnamon (see extra) and turpentine and someone planted an ebony tree as there are few left and they grow extremely slowly. As with the rest of our other excursions it had been a most informative trip and was good to walk in the natural environment away from habitation.
