WEEKEND BLIP MEET
We have had a great weekend with Yvonne and Geoff in Newmarket - despite the mixed weather - with excellent company, good food and plenty of talking and laughter - and as Yvonne said in her blip yesterday, we haven’t stopped talking!
Today they took us to Bury St. Edmunds and along with about 2,000 people, we attended the Remembrance Day Service in the square. We were most impressed with the Beavers and Cubs, who despite being at the very back and not being able to see anything, stood beautifully and without talking.
Personally, I felt that they missed a good opportunity to involve all those who attended because although one of the military bands played several hymns, there were no Orders of Service, so unless you knew the words, you couldn’t join in. Having said that, not many joined in the singing of the National Anthem - a sign of the times perhaps!
Most people seemed to be heading for the town after the service, but we went to St. Edmunds bury Cathedral, where were were privileged to hear the “Quire” singing, whilst we wandered around exploring and enjoying the beauty around us. We were very impressed with the Cathedral and felt it was warm and inviting, perhaps because of the colour of the stone, and not at all austere and cold as some can be. I took quite a lot of photographs in there, but liked this one of Yvonne and Geoff taken in the archway of The Angel Hotel, where they were married almost five years ago.
Thank you Yvonne and Geoff for your warm hospitality and friendship - we have enjoyed our stay with you and hope to see you again before too long.
“When you go home,
Tell them of us, and say,
‘For their tomorrow,
We gave our today.’”
John Maxwell Edmonds (1875-1958)
