Caerphilly Castle

This grade l listed castle was constructed in the 13th century by Gilbert de Clare as part of his campaign to conquer Glamorgan. It is surrounded by extensive artificial lakes and at the time construction it was said that the castle had the most elaborate water defences in the whole of Britain. The South East tower shown in the photograph has a distinct lean of about 10 degrees outwards, experts think that is due to subsidence when the castle fell into dis-repair and the moats dried up around the 16th century. An interesting day out!
