Langdale Pikes

Today's the day ........................ to view from afar

It was a beautiful day today weatherwise and we went for one of our favourite walks from Helsington Church to Sizergh Castle.

This walk has the advantage that you are on a nice safe path walking along a ridge - which gives you wonderful views from Morecambe Bay right into the heart of the Lake District Fells.  Today the three peaks of Langdale - Pike o' Stickle, Loft Crag and Harrison Stickle, going from left to right - were easily visible.  A 'stickle' is a hill with a steep prominent rocky top, while a 'pike'  is a hill with a peaked summit.  So as far as I'm concerned Pike o' Stickle is somewhere to avoid at all costs.

But today they were far away, their icy slopes glinting in the sunshine.  Just the sort of distance from which I like to see them .......................
