Can't take my eyes off of you....

ABC of Troon .... I .. .is for Isle of Pin Road.

You'll love this one... not a lot...

Isle of Pin Road, is the only road in Town beginning with I.   I tried to contemplate other things in town which might begin with I, but I couldn't.

This little road, runs from the Monktonhill Road, up to the Rugby Club and the Fullarton Woods (see F).  There are two houses situated on it, and one is for sale.  It is Lush, I checked it out on Right Move.  There is another house. I lie, just checked Google Aerial View, there are another two houses in the woods which lie to the left - I think there is an entrance way at the end of this road, never seen them, too many trees.

Why is it called Isle of Pin?

That, I believe is the question.   I have researched thoroughly (ie., Google and Facebook Pages), and discovered that it was renamed Isle of Pins in the 1930's.    It was renamed to avoid confusion with a flurry of "Southwoods, Monktonhills, Fullartons, and Lochgreens".

There were many suggestions to the origin, from Smugglers naming the place because it reminded them of "The Isle of Pines" in the Caribbean, or because there were "lots of Pine Trees", (not really), and something about Captain Cook naming them, because the Isle of Pins reminded him of Scotland and then he popped in and visited the Duke of Portland while he was building the railway, (Okay - that's a pile of poop - the railway was built in 1804 - Captain Cook died in 1779), but the most sensible one derives from the stone post which you can see just past the houses on the left.

This is the last remaining "Pin" or Pillar which stood at the entrance to the Fullarton Estate.

Apparently the Fullartons carried out punishments on the wrong do'ers of their time at the pillars.

When I say "wrongdoers", I mean, people who might have coveted their neighbours sheep, or looked lustfully at their Second-Aunty-Twice Removed's Goat, the occasional Pick Pocket (there weren't many pockets around at that time), and of course Smugglers, murderers and general out and out villains.

I think this involved tying them to the Pins and whooping ten ounces of skin off their bahookey.  (I completely made that up).

I'm not 100% convinced about this, because In the woods to the rear of them, there are still four pillars standing there.   Maybe there were 8 pillars, front and back?

Confused?  I am.
