I approached him because he was smoking: I'm starting a new series about people who are relegated outside to enjoy their habit (which was also mine for many years). 

He balked: "oh dear, no! Cigarettes make people look sooo ugly" as he took a quick puff. Change of tactic: "You may have a point. So what if I just took your portrait sans cig?" He brightened up: "oh yes, absolutely! Should I smile or pucker?" And here you have the answer :)
