Ubiquitous

I went up to the West End office briefly for a meet and greet with the new director. Then on my way home I called in at a well known retail opportunity on Princes Street and went down to the basement food hall. I was browsing their fresh baked bread when a man in a baker's hat strolled past. I asked if any of his fresh-baked bread contained palm oil and he replied that he couldn't say for sure but it probably did since "It's in everything these days, isn't it?" (So much for the baker's hat). I said I had a weakness for orang-utans, and left.

I've been trying to avoid foods with palm oil in for some time, but seem to have taken my eye off the ball - it used to feature only in the most highly processed pre-packaged baked goods, but now it's turning up everywhere. Biscuits I knew about - but bread? Stock cubes?? I was so annoyed that I came home and baked some bread - something I haven't done for ages. It won't be very good but if I really have to keep doing this it should improve with practice, like it did when I baked our own bread back in the '70s.
