Watching him, watching her, watching him

He's very much a rugged individualist, George. 

When I pointed out that the bread he was slicing (with great difficulty) was old and stale, he pointed out that a) he knew, and b) that's how he liked it. 

He then made a great show of enjoying his crunchy bread and cheese. Luckily he didn't break any teeth. 

I got the impression that Stella was trying to let him know she'd be happy to help if need be.
