Curry
Roz was back in Edinburgh this week and I met up with her Ann & Baxter for our usual afternoon of debauchery. We met up at The Royal MacGregor for a few pints of Volcano IPA (a rather tasty IPA from local brewery Barney's Beer), we hung around for a few pints waiting for the torrential rain to ease up but eventually nipped around the corner to The Advocate Bar for a pint of Goose Island beer. At this point we were getting hungry and Roz enthusiastically announced she wanted a curry. Coincidentally there is an Indian Restaurant just up the street from The Advocate so we did not have to go far.
I've past by "The Royal Spice" in Hunter Square many times but never been in before. Their menu is fairly standard but they do a number of "meal deals" and their prices are fairly reasonable. The quality was good and everybody seemed to enjoy their food. I can't remember what everybody chose but I went for the "Chili Garlic Chicken" (see "Extra Photo" for a closer view), I found it surprisingly hot and spicy but very tasty. Not an especially outstanding restaurant but certainly worth visiting if you're in the mood for a curry in or around the Royal Mile.
After eating Ann & Baxter headed home and Roz and I retired to "The Albanach Bar" for a couple whiskies. We started off with an 18 year old Bunnahabhain (pronounced Boon-a-hav-in) which was lovely, it has a fairly heavy dark oaky flavour with hints of nuts and honey and then Roz suggested we should try the 25 year old for comparison. The 25 year old was darker and even smoother it was really good. We then tried a 18 year old Dalmore, it was nice but a bit sharper and more citrusy than the Bunnahabhain so we went back for one final 25 year old before heading home.
As always it was lovely spending time with Roz, Ann & Baxter, although my head is a little fuzzy today :-)
