Make just one, someone happy

ABC of Troon... S is for South Beach Hotel 

When I was about ... 19, I had a week's trial as a breakfast waitress here.  

I'm afraid 6 am starts did not agree with me.   So that was quickly knocked on the head. 

Me mam  and Da had their reception here in 1959...,  My sister worked here when she was..... 18 maybe?      And Tooli, well she worked here too.  

She was so amazed when she went for an interview (not having done this type of work before), when they basically told her on the spot that she was hired, and she was "Barmaid". 

This amused us all no end, because Tooli very rarely drank; didn't frequent  pubs, (Oh how times change)... and we had no idea how she would manage. 

On her first evening, there was much hilarity - someone had asked for something like "Being Brown", and had to point it out to her, and then she had to charge it, but she wasn't sure what Being Brown was, so put it through as "gin".   I suggested it might be "Makers Mark", and that it was "bourbon".  No idea what Bourbon was either .  

Oh how we did laugh. 

But that job  - was a turning point; my goodness my wee wean fairly came out of her shell behind that bar.
