Peaking above...

A morning drive across the Fens took us to Peterborough and its beautiful cathedral, one of the finest Norman cathedrals in England. Founded as a monastic community in 654 AD, it became one of the most significant medieval abbeys in the country, the burial place of two queens (Katharine of Aragon, and Mary Queen of Scots) and the scene of Civil War upheavals (extra photos 1-3). You can see the cathedral’s impressive Early English Gothic West Front peaking above the Cathedral Precinct’s Norman Archway in the main photo.

A scenic detour on the way home took us to Houghton Mill (extra photo 4), an impressive working 18th century watermill in an idyllic village location on an island on the Great Ouse River. The mill was closed for the season, and for building work, but it was a pleasant place to wander and the village was full of quaint cottages straight out of the Vicar of Dibley!!
