Dungeness at dusk

Originally we planned to walk along the north Kent coast around Faversham, completing another section of our walk around the Kent coast, calling in at Macknades Farm and Fine Foods shop in Faversham for a bit of shopping and lunch as we have done for the last few Christmases.

A change of plan saw us both doing Christmas things in the morning then travelling down to Greatstone on Sea for a walk along the beach and fish and chips at the Pilot at Dungeness. Those of you who've been there will know what a desolate and fascinating place Dungeness is; piles of shingle, wonderful assortment of houses and shacks and the UK's only desert.

The place to go for fish and chips is the Pilot, with its sign creaking in the wind, reminiscent of smugglers and Dickensian times with excellent fish and chips. We keep trying to go to the Britannia for fish and chips. That pub is even more isolated, tucked right on the south east corner of the UK under the nuclear powerstation, but when we arrived the place was shut and in darkness, probably only opening at the weekend.
