"Respecting traditions and the past"
I was in school all morning, today. Since I was last in this building, this new piece has been mounted on the wall. I'm guessing these are all school caps from over the centuries: it's a nice reflection of the school value of "respecting traditions and the past".
The ten school values take the place of school rules. Another one, for example, is "being decent to other people". This seems a far better way to run a society, even this school community of two thousand people, than having loads of rules in which people can find loopholes and interpretations.
For example, a couple of days ago I found out that since they were taken over in 2010, Cadbury's have paid no corporation tax in the UK. I get that they haven't broken any laws in order to avoid paying this tax but that's actually moot, isn't it? If you trade in this country - or any country - and you make a profit, then you should pay your tax to the government and, therefore, the society you are selling to and profiting from.
I wish our judges could be trusted with applying values rather than laws and that we could tell companies like Cadburys (and Amazon and Google and Facebook and Starbucks and Vodafone) to just play fair and cough up. This rampant unfettered capitalism is killing our society. And that's not a left wing argument, it's just common sense.
