Vestmannaeyjar adventures

Today was a fantastic day on the Westman Islands! It looked like it was going to be a bad day when it started pouring as we walked into town. We walked to the harbor because we wanted to book a tour of the islands. We walked into "rib safari" assuming it was the only tour company on the island and reserved our seats on the boat. We then went back into the rain to get breakfast in town. Drenched, we walked in a little bakery and ate breakfast and tried to figure out what to do until our tour later that day. We decided to go the aquarium/museum, so we ventured once more out into the rain.

The aquarium/museum was very small and funny. There was a room dedicated to the history of the island but there wasn't much in English. In the other rooms there were stuffed Birds and other animals that were very strange looking. The bird in this picture reminded me of a character straight out of a Roald Dahl book. I spent a lot of time taking pictures of all the odd displays. In another dark room were live fish that we looked at for a while and then a man brought in a puffin that we all got to hold and pet!

Our tour of the island was fantastic! Turns out the tame tour I had read about in the guidebook was with a different company. The tour we went on was so much better than I expected. We wore huge yellow jumpsuits and hopped into a speedboat that sped around blasting music and flew over waves, it was like a roller coaster.

The last adventure of the day was at Lukka the horse rental place. The man there did not really speak English do we were nervous that he wouldn't be able to instruct us properly. Alana and I were the only ones who wanted to ride so after we were set up with our brown horses (that we named Whitey and Lilac) we set off around the island. We had a great time on our Icelandic horses and we got to see more of the islands including the volcano that had erupted in 1973.
