In transit

Could there be a finer nine hour journey?

The roads were carnage as we left home just before 7.30am, with dead cars strewn half on, half off roads as they'd been abandoned yesterday in the floods. Luckily, the water had receded enough for us to leave.

The roads were quiet and blue sky spread across the sky as the sun rose as if nothing had happened and no more was to come.

We left it all behind once we were through the not so shallow waters in Gargrave and had a smooth ride up past the Howgills and on to Scotland. We spotted the flooding at Carlisle which was really levelling and felt for the locals with more rain forecast.

We've been looking forward to this trip for some time and, as we drove up towards Glencoe, the heavily snow-capped mountains made us feel more excited.

Today will probably be the best weather day of the week by far. But, we expect bad weather and that's OK. It's the remoteness and feeling of getting away from it all that makes our winter trips.

The lovely conditions made the journey thoroughly enjoyable and it was only really the last hour that became a little tedious as the light faded.

We like our new home for the week and have settled down for dinner and our first DVD night.
