Looking down...
...from Harbottle Castle.
What to do on a very wet day? Far too wet underfoot for a walk in the hills or on the beach.
We decided on a drive down to Rothbury. As is MrM's custom, he drove us via the scenic route - at least it would have been scenic without the mist and persistent drizzle! We happened to pass by the ruins of Harbottle Castle as the rain eased up for a short while, and took the opportunity to walk up to the remaining walls.
The castle was once of strategic importance. Henry II ordered it to be built to aid the defence of Northumberland and, apparently, in 1296 it withstood a 40,000-strong attack from Scotland.
We continued on to Rothbury for a walk around the town and found a cafe for a very nice lunch.
Back home and, all too soon, it was time to take Tom in to Berwick to see him off on a train back home - he's due at work first thing tomorrow morning.
