Epiphany
I love the celebration of the Eucharist for Epiphany - at least the way we do it in Holy Trinity Dunoon. Just as all the world seems to be going back to work, their Christmas trees abandoned in gardens or in recycling depots, the cards binned or being used to update the dreaded lists - just as it seems to be all over we meet once more in the gloriously candlelit church, with incense and bells and wonderful music and relive the story of the power of earthly wisdom and might coming face to face with Love.
It seems especially potent this year, with love being seen in action among ordinary people all over the world at the same time as earthly powers are either flexing their muscles or ponderously moving to some policy or other. And whether it is the threat of nuclear darkness or spiritual darkness, we have to promise that somewhere there will be a candle burning ...
