Saturday: Kamanje

It was Newman's birthday a few days ago.  To celebrate, she invited friends and family out to the family village of Kamanje, very near the Slovenian border.  Newman, although Australian, is Croatian on her mother's side and many of her relatives still live in the area.

The drive, once we got off the motorway, was spectacular.  Motorway as far as Karlovac, then roads decreasing in size and width, through Ozalj and on to Kamanje.  When we rounded a bend, just before reaching our destination, we had to stop and take some photos.

Newman's uncle slaughtered a pig and a lamb this morning and they were roasting on the spit when we got there.  Undoubtedly, the freshest meat we have ever had.  We sat at long trestle tables in Newman's cousin's caffe/bar (the unlikely named Cafe Escobar - I felt that we should be sitting in deepest Medellin......) and passed platters of meat, potato salad and spring onions back and forth, while listening to retro Yugo-pop.

After dinner, a group of us took a walk down to the river that marks the border with Slovenia.  Definitely the best snow walk I have had this year.
